OnePAD is a new notebook app for iOS that is organized around the idea of using one page for each day. I know lots of folks that are day driven and/or keep paper notebooks this way — allocating a page for each day.

What I find most interesting is that, by organizing by date, one could easily use it for journalling, morning pages, or leaving notes for future dates.

There is a built in search function and quick ways to jump back to today’s note or navigate to a specific date.

It also has a pleasant look and feel plus a fair price ($0.99).

This week’s cover features this blue-eyed little angel warning us of America’s coming obesity crisis. We’re fat, she’s (he?) saying, and we’re only getting fatter. So why is she on our cover? A new four-part HBO documentary (premiering next Monday and Tuesday) called “The Weight of the Nation” warns that the coming generation of Americans could even have shorter lifespans than the previous one. In Newsweek, Gary Taubes, author of “Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It,” takes a critical look at the film, and writes about the greater issue of obesity in America.

Janrain has released a study powered by its Engage tool, which analyzed some 365,000 sites. Overall, Janrain found that Facebook accounted for 45% of social logins, while Google came in at 31%. Yahoo and Twitter collectively hold an 18% share of social logins, while LinkedIn, Myspace and a number of other sites account for the remaining 3%. Over 2,000 people from 24 cities world-wide took part in NASA’s International Space Apps Challenge, producing over 200 solutions using NASA data sets, over two days at the end of April. The ‘codeathon’ brought event together citizens who wanted to collectively address critical challenges. The idea is to use minimal resources to compete with other teams around the world, utilizing publicly available space and data to design innovative “solutions” to a pre-determined series of global “challenges.” In NASA’s case this took part across all continents and even in space on the International Space Station. We stopped by the San Francisco codeathon taking part at Techshop and spoke to astronaut Ron Garan, and Willow Brugh from Geeks Without Bounds - SF’s location lead, about their involvement with the project. The graph includes data from the top 200 grossing games in the Apple App Store and the Google Play store.

Newzoo – the market research firm behind the study – also notes that in three months, the Kindle Fire has doubled Android’s share of revenues in the US compared to European countries.

That sounds impressive, but that’s where I get lost. Or at least some of my trust. Amazon has its own Appstore for the Kindle Fire, right? I thought that Kindle Fire users needed to sideload Google Play apps, and I can’t imagine sideloaders having a great impact on the market. So what’s up and what’s down, what’s in and what’s not?

Disney researchers put gesture recognition in door knobs, chairs, fish tanks

Imagine a door that locks when you pinch the knob. Or a smartphone that can be silenced by a hand gesture. Or a chair that adjusts room lighting when you recline into it.

A team of researchers at Disney Research and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh have come up with a system called Touché, which uses the same capacitive technology as a smartphone’s touchscreen to imbue everyday objects with body and gesture recognition.

When he told his editor that the whole horse thing wasn’t going to work out, he recalls her “acid tone[d]” response: “Maurice, what can you draw?”
